Fort Worth, Texas–The Juneteenth Family Reunion Festival in Fort Worth, Texas, was a vibrant celebration of freedom and African American culture, running from June 14th to June 16th, 2024. This event was organized by Unity Unlimited Inc. and honored the impactful work of Dr. Opal Lee, affectionately known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.”

A significant highlight of the festival was the Juneteenth Film Festival, held at AMC Palace 9, which featured a selection of films that honor Juneteenth and African American heritage. One standout film was the 2022 family comedy “Block Party,” which played to a sold-out audience and garnered resounding approval from attendees, including Opal Lee herself. The film, which humorously and poignantly addresses themes of dementia, elder care, and brain health within the Black community, stars African American legends such as John Amos, Margaret “Sug” Avery, Bill Cobbs, Luenell, and Faizon Love (FortWorth.com) (HappeningNext).

“Block Party” was also part of an enlightening panel discussion sponsored by the Health and Aging Brain Study Health Disparities (HSC) and hosted by caregiver coach Pat Bailey. The film’s writers and producers, including Lisa Mathis, Krista Suh, and Matt Allen, participated in the discussion, emphasizing the film’s dual role as both a comedy and a heartfelt tribute to Juneteenth, the holiday that Opal Lee helped turn into a federal holiday (97.9 The Beat).

The festival also featured the “Empowering You” Health & Education Fair at Tarrant County College, offering free health screenings, educational opportunities, and valuable resources aimed at addressing disparities within the community. Additionally, cultural activations, arts and crafts, thrilling rides, and a grand fireworks show at Panther Island Pavilion provided entertainment for all ages (Issuewire) (FamilyReunionFest).

The success of “Block Party” at this festival underscores its potential to become a staple in Juneteenth celebrations across the nation, much like the film “Miss Juneteenth.” The festival’s dynamic and inclusive programming continues to honor the spirit of Juneteenth, reflecting the resilience and strength of the African American community.
