Hollywood, CA--For too long, the conventional wisdom among Hollywood executives has been that “Black movies don’t travel.” This “belief” has historically led to limited international releases for African American films, with studios hesitant to invest in the necessary localization through dubbing or closed captioning, citing high costs. However, the tide is turning with the advent of groundbreaking AI technology that is making film localization more accessible and affordable.

Branch Out Productions, the creative force behind the Juneteenth comedy “Block Party,” is pioneering this change by partnering with the innovative AI company ElevenLabs. This collaboration has resulted in the film being dubbed into multiple languages for less than a thousand dollars per language—a fraction of the traditional cost. This technological advancement not only shatters previous financial barriers but also challenges the outdated narrative that African American films lack international appeal.

“Block Party,” often referred to as the “A Christmas Story” of Juneteenth, parallels the unexpected rise of the Christmas classic which initially launched with little fanfare only to become a beloved holiday staple. Like its Christmas counterpart, “Block Party” is on a trajectory to become an integral part of Juneteenth celebrations, not just in the United States but around the world.

The film’s inclusion in the upcoming Juneteenth event in Fort Worth, TX, curated by none other than Opal Lee—often called the Grandmother of Juneteenth—underscores its cultural significance. As “Block Party” solidifies its place in Juneteenth culture, its potential international expansion could transform it from a national treasure to a global phenomenon.

While Branch Out Productions is in talks with Paramount Global for the international rights, nothing is yet set in stone. This uncertainty, however, does not dampen the enthusiasm surrounding the film’s global prospects. The use of AI in film dubbing not only offers a new lease on life for “Block Party” but also serves as a beacon for other films within the African American community, proving that these stories can indeed “travel” and resonate across borders.

As “Block Party” prepares to make its mark internationally, it stands as a testament to the universal power of humor, community, and celebration. With the support of cutting-edge technology and a renewed interest in diverse storytelling, the film is poised to break cultural and linguistic barriers, ensuring that Juneteenth—and its cinematic representations—gain their rightful place on the global stage.
